Interval Timing: Chronograph Traces Its Origin to the Early 1800s

In 1821, Nicolas Rieussec patented his chronograph. It was housed in a box.

Chronograph watches are great functional timepieces that not only tell the time, but also actually time all of those outdoor activities you indulge in – swimming, jogging, rowing, and more. Here, we outline the basics about what exactly a chronograph watch is and how it functions. Keep in mind that entire books have been written about chronographs, so we take just a cursory glance so you can better understand their use.

Further improvements were made to chronographs in the 1820s.

Essentially, a chronograph is a watch that measures and records specific intervals of time, ranging from a fraction of a second to hours – such as a race, a test, dive times, etc. The Greek translation of chronograph is time writer, and the first patented chronograph watch was invented in 1821 by Nicolas Rieussec, although recent historical findings indicate that watchmaker Louis Moinet may have made his own version of a chronograph before Rieussec made and patented his. Either way, the patented Rieussec chronograph (generally credited as the first) used ink to measure dots on the dial at the stop of an event. His device consisted of two dials and was encased in a large box.

Today, we have come a long way in our mechanical prowess. Today’s watches feature small subdials on the full dial – and within each subdial, a different measurement is tracked: hours or minutes. Seconds are often run off of a main central seconds timer and the watch usually features a subdial for the continuous running of the seconds used in keeping time vs. tracking time intervals. The very distinctive look of a chronograph dial, with its harmoniously balanced subdials, is often much of the allure of these watches.

Chronographs generally feature stop, start and return-to-zero functions that are controlled by pushing the chronograph buttons. Some watches have these functions all working off of a single pusher (called single- or mono-pusher chronographs) while others have two pushers that are usually situated above and below the watch crown on the case side.

In these watches, the chronograph timing function is activated by pushing the start button at 2:00 to start recording the time and by pushing the same button again, to stop the recording of the timed event. Once the time is recorded and read by the wearer, he can return the tracking hands back to zero by pushing the button at 4:00, thereby resetting the mechanism. Some watches also offer a “fly-back function” (referred to as flyback chronographs), wherein, the hand flies back to zero automatically.

There are also more complex and sophisticated chronographs, such as Split-Seconds Chronographs (also referred to as Rattrapantes). These watches have two second hands, one of which splits, or appears to divide, from the other so that they can act independently of one another. This technology allows the timing of several events that start at the same time, but have different durations, such as when timing multiple runners in a race. The more complex the chronograph, the more expensive it is.

In addition to regular chronograph watches, there are some high-precision mechanical chronographs referred to as column-wheel chronographs. Whereas in modern chronographs, the functions operate via a series of cams that are added to the base caliber, the mechanism inside a column-wheel chronograph is integrated into the watch and is configured differently. A column-wheel chronograph consists of a toothed mechanism that features notches on the side into which levers slide, engaging the different timing mechanisms. The raised portions of the notches are called columns (hence the name column-wheel chronograph).

A chronograph should not be confused with a Chronometer (a movement that is certified by an observatory to meet several very stringent conditions), though some chronographs can also be chronometers. NAWCC Introduces Workshop Titled 'Luxury or Lie? How to Identify Genuine Watches'

If you are a vintage watch collector or buyer of older timepieces, this story is for you. The fact of the matter is that many top retailers sell vintage timepieces and pre-owned timepieces, and — when purchased through us — customers can rest assured they are getting an authentic watch. However, when you buy from unknown sources, you can sometimes come out on the short end of the stick.

Now, the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC) has implemented an educational course for watch lovers who really want to know how to spot a fake. The course, entitled "Luxury or Lie? How to Identify Genuine Watches," has been designed and developed by the NAWCC along with wristwatch curator Adam Harris. It includes an overview of watch types, offers a quick litmus test to determine if a watch may be a fake and helps watch lovers understand what to be on-guard about when it comes to vintage timepieces. In fact, there are multiple types of "fakes" on the market, ranging from super fake to altered or re-worked. The multi-day workshop in Columbia, Pa., teaches participants watch-examination techniques. The course will include the best ways to identify a genuine watch, including what to look for in case weight and finish, dials, hands, strap and movement.

“After working in a pawn shop for some years, I realized how difficult it was to quickly and correctly differentiate a genuine piece from a fake… Long gone are the days of cheap Chinese fakes and we are now being offered ‘Super Fakes’ that even defy the ability of the manufacturers to tell the difference,” says instructor Adam Harris. “The new course will reveal many of the major manufacturers’ counterfeit measures, some hidden and some still unknown.”

Class size is limited. The cost for the full 2 1/2-day program is $1,250; an advance “early bird” registration rate of $1,000 is available for attendees who register before September 1, 2015. Understanding the Three Different Types of Watch Crystals: They Are Not All Created Equally

Summer activities, especially water sports, can be hard on the wristwatch — and its crystal. The crystal is the clear cover that goes over the dial and protects it. Depending on what that crystal is made of, it can get scratched or even broken if hit too hard. It is a good idea to know what sort of crystal your watch, or the watch you are thinking of buying, is equipped with.

There are typically three main types of crystals used in watches: sapphire crystal, mineral crystal and hesalite crystal. The one your watch features is often reflected in the retail price of the watch. Here, we take a look at each material individually.

Sapphire crystals:
Sapphire crystals are the preferred choice in luxury watches because they are extremely strong and scratch resistant. They are also the more expensive of the three crystal choices. While this crystal is called sapphire, it should be noted that it is not made from naturally mined sapphire. Instead, the crystals are created as a synthetic compound — and hold the same properties as its natural counterpart.

The process of producing sapphires synthetically was invented in 1893 by French chemist Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil, and shared with the world in 1902. It's formal name is the Verneuil Process, but is more commonly referred to as flame fusion. Essentially, a long column of synthetic sapphire is manufactured in a special furnace using powdered aluminum oxide particles. When they reach temperatures over 2000 degrees Celsius, they melt and then fuse with one another to re-crystallize in a new column form.

The column is then sliced (with diamond-tipped cutters) to a specific millimeter of thickness and polished to become a watch crystal. Sapphire crystals, as mentioned, are more able to resist scratching and breakage. Anti-reflective coatings can be added to both sides of the crystal without any hazing.



Mineral Glass Crystals:
Generally a mineral crystal is an ordinary glass crystal that has been heat treated or chemically treated to withstand scratches. However, it is not as scratch-resistant as sapphire and is, therefore, typically used in mid-priced watches where cost is a factor (as mineral glass is less expensive to use than sapphire crystal). Under extreme hot or cold conditions – if the glass is bluntly hit on a certain angle – the glass can crack or shatter. The main benefit to mineral glass crystal lies in its price.

Hesalite Crystals:
Also referred to as plastic crystals, Plexiglas, or acrylic crystals, these are the least expensive option and are most commonly found on lower-priced wristwatches. Plastic will not shatter or crack, but it scratches very easily.

Why Traditional Watches May Trump Smart Watches in the Luxury Category

It seems that while Smart watches are popping up all over the marketplace, not everyone is interested in the high-end models. In fact, it looks as though Apple is no longer selling its 18-karat gold watch (which carried an average retail of between $10,000 and $17,000).



This may be because Apple execs have learned that they can't tread in the classic watch category. After all, it is difficult to expect anyone to spend $15,000 or so on a watch whose technology needs to be constantly updated. That money can be better spent on a fine timepiece with a pedigree of watchmaking history.

While most consumers seem eager to have a smart watch that can track steps, sleep patterns and more, in addition to receiving messages and alerts, this category of watch just won't steal away customers' interest in owning a traditional timepiece.



Additionally, some watch brands, including Movado, Frederique Constant, TAG Heuer, and even Breitling, are really embracing the Smart watch or connected concept, and are unveiling a couple of traditional watches that have the connected angle. This may well be to demonstrate to today's customers that the traditional watch can be cutting-edge, too, and may be the "smarter" choice.



Even in the fashion arena, designers are jumping on the Smart bandwagon. Last week, during New York Fashion Week, Michael Kors showed off his newest Smart watch, the Michael Kors Access smartwatch featuring designs based on the brand's most iconic styles. The Educational Value of Greek Cruises

Each port excursion was optional but also expensive, ranging up to $75 depending on the excursion. I lobbied for Heraklion and the ruins of Knossos. Teaching Western Civilization, the fabled palace of Minos seemed to be a necessity, perhaps even a pilgrimage, if only to me. Whether it was my retelling of the Minotaur legend or the cheap prices in Crete, the group opted to trek through the ruins, never finding the legendary labyrinth or, for that matter, any trace of the Minotaur.

My colleagues lobbied for Santorini and the iconic blueroofed dwellings that look out across the harbor. Kusadasi was a toss up. Watch Sighting: Versace Dylos Chrono Watch for Men

I recently spotted this Versace Dylos Chrono watch for men at the runway T.J. Maxx. It's a pretty sharp watch with two interestingly recessed octagonal sub-dials and a third subdial with a rounded aspect. It has a 44 millimeter diameter case and a 22 millimeter wide leather strap. It's water resistant to 50 meters. It is powered by a reliable Swiss Quartz movement. The chronometer bezel markings and stainless case give this watch a purposeful nature that is balanced by the fashionable Versace Medusa logo. This is somewhat toned down from my last Versace watch sighting. Overall, it looks very much like an executive watch to me.

Unfortunately, I didn't catch the price on this luxury timepiece. It seems that price tags on watches are always flipped down at the stores. I hate that! It forces buyers to ask the clerk, flip over the tag, and then admit that they are too poor to buy that particular watch. At least on Amazon, you can either afford it or you can't afford it and no one has to know!
